In the beginning there was a box with lots of 6 cm x 6 cm negatives. My wife showed much interest in the development of these negatives of her father since most of its content was unknown to her for decades. My father-in-law had planned to do the developement by himself. But other things were more important. The box with the negatives remained untouched. Brought to life the pictures – derived from these negatives – contained many things new and surprising to me: There were not only the pictures of the family, but moreover dozens of pictures with other centres of interest:  day to day life in Vogelsang, a quiet green neighbourhood at the border of Cologne, religious life, working life with a touching familiarity and finally pictures from outside Cologne. Later on, Peter and his wife Franziska discovered that life outside Cologne could be pleasant and valuable as well.

My interest on this ’Peter project’ remained vivid even if some rare pictures had technical shortcomings. Some portrayed people lacked e.g. the feet. This was probably due to the viewfinder of the Yashica Mat-124G camera. It made it sometimes difficult to predict the later outcome. Nevertheless, the fotos conveyed a lust for life and an unbelievable resilience in a city that was vastly destroyed not only in its center quarters.

What surprised me as well was the view on traditions that were preserved. These traditions comprised especially religious life. However, the pictures showed no narrow-mindedness either, despite this ‘spiessig’ label for the fifties in Germany. As someone with an interest in history it was clear to me that the pictures were representative for more people of Cologne than just my family. That’s why I present these pictures online. [However, I am keen on other platforms for these pictures.]

The pictures on display: Most of the pictures presented were made by Peter Aachen, my father-in-law. This collection was enriched by other fotos of the generation before. Some of these go back to the twenties and comprise the thirties and the fourties. Additional fotos were taken from the broschure  ”Als Koelle vill zovill Koelsche hat…” (2002) and the book ”Wohnreform in Köln” (1986), edited by Klaus Novy.

Generally the fotos are presented without title. I hope that these fotos speak for themselves. Titles for the comprising start pages should give the overview needed. (These start pages are represented by the menues on the left hand side.) Where the date of a photo is available it is conveyed. Copyright notes are given on the credential page.
